Keep It Green: Cannabis, Chlorophyll and Healing Yourself

When we get sick the first thing we are told is to “eat more greens”. as it turns out chlorophyll, which is responsible for making plants green, also contains powerful healing properties.

When it comes to cannabis there’s a lot of noise about CBD’s and THC but one of the most powerful healing properties in cannabis seems to get overlooked – Chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll is responsible for the green colour in the leaves and because there is so much chlorophyll in cannabis, the plant is very, very green.

When it comes to cooking with cannabis, many people try to take the chlorophyll out because of aesthetics and flavour but I would argue that this is a mistake. Here’s why…

Reb Blood Cells: Chlorophyll is crucial in aiding with the restoring and replenishing of red blood cells, but, most importantly, it has the ability to regenerate our body. This is because haemoglobin and chlorophyll have similar structures. The main difference is that haemoglobin is built around iron whereas chlorophyll is built around magnesium. The primary function of haemoglobin is to transport oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body

Chlorophyll is also rich in live-enzymes which help in the cleansing of the blood and which, again, enhances the ability of the blood to carry more oxygen.

Vitamins & Minerals: As it turns out, chlorophyll is an excellent source of vitamins such as vitamin A, C, E and K as well as beta carotene. It’s also a powerful antioxidant and provides you with vital minerals such as magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium and essential fatty acids.

Magnesium is also responsible for the green colour. The magnesium, which is the central molecule of chlorophyll, contains a special ring shaped formation which captures wavelengths of light. However, green is not captured and so the colour green is reflected back to our eye.

Magnesium is also known to provide a high alkalising effect on the body and delivers oxygen to body tissues and cells.

Spotting A Trend…It’s Oxygen!

I once went 40 days without eating any food and I was fine but find me a few minutes into a sever asthma attack and I’m turning blue and literally feeing the life ebb out of me. Oxygen is crucial for life and without it we die pretty quickly.

Every single cell in our bodies requires oxygen. Our cells are energized by oxygen in order for regeneration to happen. Oxygen is required for food motabilisation as well as the elimination of toxins and waste through the process of oxidation.

Our brain needs oxygen continually to process information and in order for our organs to function efficiently they need loads of oxygen. Basically everything that we take for granted: thinking, moving, eating, sleeping, feeling and talking, are all entirely dependant on oxygen for the energy to facilitate these processes.

When your immune system is compromised by a lack of oxygen, you are more susceptible to bacterial, viral infections, colds and flu. Oxygen-deficient blood presents itself with a variety of metabolic disorders, most recognizable by excess uric acid which makes your body acidic rather than alkaline. Oxygen protects you against unfriendly bacteria and toxins and will help your body cleanse them from your system while keeping your body alkaline.

Oxygen has been used in a myriad of ways to heal. It is used to treat the sick and injured, it treats bone infections, wounds, carbon-monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness and now the sports field has opened its eyes to increasing oxygen levels to treat athletes.

Increased oxygen has been shown to heal cancers and reduce inflammation. When your body has enough oxygen you feel energised and motivated.

Image result for cannabisSo, we know that chlorophyll helps the body to maximize it’s oxygen intake and we know that cannabis has loads and loads of chlorophyll – it’s one of the most abundant properties found in this amazing plant. So, when you make oil and it comes out so green that it looks black – this is good! This is not only THC and CBD’s but a rich source of powerful, healing, oxygen creating chlorophyll.

So next time you cook with cannabis and everything goes a light shade of green, don’t despair, rejoice because the green is an integral part of the healing experience. The more chlorophyll you eat, the more oxygen your body is able to convert into your blood and the healthier you become. With oxygen-rich blood you are able to fight off disease effectively and you are able to heal more quickly.

If you have access to the fresh plant, then eating it raw is always best . Any heat begins to destroy or change vital nutrients so juicing the leaves or eating them in a salad regularly will provide you with the most long term benefits.

Of course, the chlorophyll is not limited to the concentrate oil – if you are growing for yourself, then eat the leaves (yes really!). Eating green plants raw is always best so if you have access to the fresh plant – use it!

It seems to me that the more I look into the cannabis plant, the more amazing it becomes and when it comes down to it, it’s best to keep it green!

Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil: Finding The Right Dosage For You

For those new to using cannabis as a medicine, the terrain can often feel strange and risky.  However, with the right approach, using cannabis can be an easy and rewarding treatment.

First Time Users Take Note: It’s important to NOT increase your dose until at least the third day.

First time users often don’t feel the effects the first time they use it because their cannabinoid receptors haven’t yet been opened. By the second night these receptors are usually wide open to receive and you will most likely feel the effects to varying degrees. Many people feel that because they didn’t feel anything the first night that they haven’t taken enough and so they double up the next night only to find themselves suffering with symptoms of overdose – which, although harmless, can be unpleasant.

Figuring Out Your Dose

This is where personal responsibility is of paramount importance.

Even if you have smoked cannabis before, it is essential to start on the smallest possible dose (tip of a teaspoon), and gradually build up to increased dosages.

Don’t increase your dosage until the third night even if it ‘doesn’t feel like it’s working’.

Increase your dosage slowly over days or weeks. I advise people to increase their dose on the weekend so they can sleep in if they feel tired in the morning while their body adjusts to the new levels.

Treating Cancer

Those treating cancer are essentially racing against time and so it’s important to increase your dosage as rapidly as you can. Start with a tip of a teaspoon on your first night. Double it the next night.

By the third night you should be able to have a half teaspoon easily, building up to tablespoons at your own pace.

By the fifth day you can start taking a tip of a teaspoon in the morning and at lunch time. Increase this dose as much as you can manage once a week.

Sometimes this is too strong and sometimes the patient does not report feeling any difference- everyone is different so it is imperative that you listen to your body and respect your tolerance levels.

Managing Chronic Conditions

For chronic conditions you would start small and slowly over days and weeks work your way up to a dose where you felt it was having the desired effect. You are able to take more time with chronic conditions so don’t rush the process, rather start small and increase your dose gradually.

Crisis of Healing

Cannabis has powerful anti-oxidants which work to release and clear our body of built up toxins. When we start using the oil we often experience symptoms of detoxificaion: mild headaches and mild nausea are the most common symptoms.

However, when using large amounts of oil we release large amounts of toxins into our systems and this can make us feel very ill. It may present as flu like symptoms or the condition you are treating may appear to be getting worse at first. This is what we refer to as a ‘crisis of healing’ – where the process of healing becomes too traumatic for the body resulting in extremely unpleasant side-effects.

If this happens to you, continue to take the oil but reduce your dosage for a week or so until your body has things back under control. Remember to drink lots of water to assist in flushing out the toxins and include dandelion tea in your daily routine to help your liver to process the toxins and cleanse the blood.

Why Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is great for you for a multitude of reasons – great at reducing bad cholesterol and high in saturated fats – which makes it excellent for extracting both THC and CBD’s. And when you combine cannabinoids with fat, the fat actually helps the cannabinoids travel through your digestive and assist with better absorption of the different properties.

500 ml Pure Virgin Organic Coconut oil

50 g Dry Cannabis

(Roughly 100 ml of coconut oil to 10 grams of powdered cannabis)

NOTE: I do not recommend decarboxylating the plant material unless you are specifically making oil to treat cancer where a highr THC ratio is required. For all other conditions no decarboxylating is required as you want to maximize your CBD’s and the heat from decarboxylating can destroy CBD’s. You will still convert THC-A into THC through the extraction process.


  1. Separate the flowers from seeds and stalks. You can use a sieve to help with this process. Pull out any larger stalks and put the dried flower into a sieve and rub it through – the seeds and smaller stalks will be held back and the plant matter will fall through. 

  2. Break your cannabis up or use scissors to chop it finely.

  3. Gently melt the coconut oil – do not let it come to the boil.

  4. Double boil: Use a large pot with water in it as the base. Put the smaller pot with the coconut oil into this pot. The water in the bottom pot will help keep the coconut oil from getting overheated.Water has a boiling point of 100C which helps to keep the coconut oil at this temperature too.

  5. Use only enough oil to cover the cannabis amount used, work on 100 ml of oil to 10 grams of powdered cannabis for a good quality.

  6. Once the oil is melted, add the chopped cannabis. The oil must never bubble or boil therefore you have to keep a constant eye on the pot, stirring at regular intervals.

  7. If the oil starts to bubble reduce the heat immediately even if this means switching off for a while this is no problem – the oil must never boil or bubble.

  8. Continue with this process for six hours always checking the heat and keeping it on constant low heat, using a wooden spoon to stir at frequent intervals.

  9. Six hours may feel long but it produces the best possible oil.

  10. After six hours turn the heat off and let the oil cool. There is no harm in switching off and continuing after a few hours if time or circumstances do not permit, even if you are cooking on a fire.

  11. Once the oil has cooled but is still fluid strain it through a muslin cloth, stocking or a fine mesh sieve using the back of a teaspoon to press the oil through. It is much easier to use the cloth or stocking which you can secure over a bowl with an elastic band.

  12. Store the oil in glass jar and keep it in a cool dry place.

    Coconut oil naturally solidifies in cooler temperatures and all you have to do is place the glass jar in some boiling warm water and let it melt. Always remember to open the glass jar before you put it in boiling water as it will crack and many patients have lost their valuable medicine in this way. You can also use your Cannabis Coconut oil in the solid form as butter or swallow it solid with water, like a pill.

  14. Do not leave the oil on the heat unattended – you will damage the cannabinoids and lose potency. Even street marijuana is expensive and this is a valuable lesson learned.

Coconut oil has a smoke point of 171 degrees Celsius. At 100 degrees and less it cannot produce any dangerous fumes because it will not create smoke at this temperature. So this recipe can be followed while cooking on gas, electricity, even fire, and anyone can make their own medicine with this recipe.
